The parade theme for the Winter Carnival last Saturday might have been “Snow Much Love,” but it came with a light drizzle. The theme recognized that it was also Valentine’s Day, according to a press release from the Homer Chamber of Commerce, which organized the event.

Chirotherm Wellness Center on Ocean Drive received the Best of Show award in Saturday’s 72nd Annual Winter Carnival Parade. The prize was $75 in Homer Bucks.

Other winning entries also received either $75 or $50 in Homer Bucks, depending upon the parade category. The other parade winners were:

• Best Use of Theme: Krewe of Gambrinus — $75;
• Judges’ Favorite: Hancock Hen House — $75;
• Best Car/Truck: South Peninsula Hospital — $50;
• Best Performing Arts: Motivity Dance Collective — $50;
• Best Use of Animals: Ninilchik Rodeo Queens — $50; and
• Best Children’s Group: Mariner Cheer — $75.

The parade grand marshals were Robert Archibald and David Brann, who have volunteered for many organizations over decades. They are particularly known for their work building and maintaining Homer’s Nordic ski trails.

“Robert and Dave remind us that volunteering isn’t just about giving back, it’s about building the community we love,” according to the chamber release.

There were approximately 30 entries in the parade, which featured the return of crowd favorites, including the Krewe of Gambrinus, which has been part of the parade for more than 30 years.

The judging station was located at Bay Realty. The judges were from Global Credit Union and visitor center volunteers. Darrel Oliver from AJ’s Steakhouse returned as the parade’s emcee, something he has done for many years.
