It’s not very often good news arrives in an envelope from the IRS , but that’s what happened this week when NZP4H, the parent company of the Homer Independent Press, learned it had been approved as a federally “tax exempt public charity.” This designation is very good news, because it unlocks the ability to secure many sources of grant and foundation funding, and can offer tax benefits to donors.
Wayne Aderhold, a Director on the NZP4H Board, led the all-volunteer effort to complete the complex application, pulling on the capabilities of all the other Board members where needed. In its usual style, the Board collaborated and put time into completing a difficult task that they had not done before.
NZP4H Board President Scott Waterman acknowledged the Board’s work in preparing the application and the benefits of the approval.
“We are very gratified to receive our approval. HIP is looking forward to building a tremendous news service worthy of our community,” he said.
