Nearly 700 people attended the third national and local No Kings protest at WKFL Park in Homer last Saturday, according to Sandy Garrity of Homer Women for Action, the protest organizer.

Homer’s protest was part of about 3,000 demonstrations planned in the U.S. last Saturday. Organizers said about 8 million attended, though the New York Times said it could not independently verify the number.

Most of the signs referenced the No Kings theme directed at President Donald Trump and a reflection of the roots of the American Revolution. One sign said “No monarchs in America except queen bees, king salmon, drag queens and butterflies.” A counter protester in front of the Homer Fire Hall held a sign that read “Jesus is King.”

With military action in Iran, some signs referenced the war. One sign simply said “Stop the War.” A small child held a sign that read “Stop bombing kids.” Homer artist Susan Cushing had a large peace symbol sign that could have been seen at an anti-war protest in the 1960s.
