Representatives must know and respect constitutional rights

A few days ago there was a radio ad by Sarah Vance saying she would attend the Fourth Of July parade and would be passing out copies of the United States Constitution. That’s great. While she was doing this I also hope she first studied our Constitution, especially the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

During her terms in office, Sarah Vance has shown little respect for the separation of church and state, a bedrock of our nation’s history. With her recent interference in the Homer News story about Charlie Kirk, where she used her position as state legislator and, using her state administrative letterhead, pressured the owners of the Homer News to change the story, she has shown total contempt for freedom of the press.

It’s time to elect a representative from our district that knows and respects our Constitution and who will represent all of the constituents, not just her religious followers.

A salute!

I was in Homer’s Fourth of July Parade as a member of the Veterans for Peace unit. All the flag wavers and cheers and “Thanks for your service” were heartwarming, but when I saw the fire department ladder trucks form an arch with the huge American flag suspended at the peak, a flood of emotions came over me. The tears welled up as I remembered 9/11 events and how this country pulled together as Americans — not Democrats or Republicans, but true patriots!

I served in the Marine Corps during the ‘Nam era and have friends on the Vietnam Memorial Wall.  Our skin color might be different, but it was all American red blood we bled.

Can we all pull together to ensure our kids and grandkids have a unified, world respected democracy that celebrates Independence Day for generations to come?  THINK ABOUT IT!

HIP thanks 100+ Women Who Care for donation

We thank 100+ Women Who Care for selecting Homer Independent Press to receive individual member donations during their June meeting! 100 WWC’s trust in us as a nonprofit less than a year old validates that our mission to tell the stories of the southern Kenai Peninsula accurately, honestly and with respect is valuable and important to our community.

Thanks to this generous donation we are catalyzing more and better local news coverage:

  • We have additional funds for freelance writers, which means more articles about the people and places on the southern Kenai Peninsula that you care about.
  • We are planning trips to Seldovia, Ninilchik and beyond to get to know our neighbors and seek freelance correspondents from those communities to better meet our mission.
  • We have plans in place to conduct journalism workshops and training for our writing team to add depth and meaning to the stories we share about the place we love.

What an amazing and generous community we call home!

Thank you, Homer!
