Staff report
August is HPV Vaccination Awareness Month, and to celebrate, Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic will host a walk-in HPV vaccine clinic next week.
From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 and Tuesday, Aug. 4, anyone ages 18-26 can stop in at the clinic for low- or no-cost cancer prevention. Homer Public Health also will be onsite on Monday to serve youth ages 9-17.
The Mayo Clinic reports that there are more than 100 types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccines can help protect against the strains of HPV most likely to cause cancer or genital warts.
According to a June 25 new service announcement from KBPFC, the HPV vaccine is recommended for all children starting at age 9, but may have been missed. Thanks to a national grant awarded in May, the clinic now offers HPV vaccination for clients aged 18 and older who may not have completed the immunization as children.
