A quick response from the Homer Volunteer Fire Department and nearby departments saved the Boardwalk Fish & Chips from completely burning on the Homer Spit at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday. About a dozen firefighters from HVFD, Kachemak Emergency Services and Western Emergency Services responded.

A man suffered minor injuries, but otherwise no one else was injured, said KES Fire Chief Jes Parker. The fire appeared to start in an apartment above the restaurant. A cat who lives at the restaurant escaped the fire, Parker said.

As of about 9:45 p.m., the fire was under control and traffic began moving from the east end of the Spit past the scene. The road had been closed by hoses spread across the road from a hydrant near Ramp 2, but traffic on Homer Spit Road was mostly clear by 10 p.m.

HVFD sent a fire engine, a ladder truck and an ambulance to the fire, and KES and WES each sent tanker trucks.

More information will be released by HVFD spokespersons at a later time.
