Prospective candidates in the upcoming Kenai Peninsula Borough election have until 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31 to file their declarations of candidacy. The filing period opened Aug. 17.
Come November, voters will elect a borough mayor for a three-year term. Incumbent Peter Micciche, who has held the seat since 2023, filed for re-election on Monday with the Alaska Public Offices Commission.
APOC showed no other candidates had registered yet for any other races in the borough election as of Wednesday afternoon.
Five borough assembly seats and three school board seats are also up for election this year, as are seats on multiple service area boards.
Homer voters will elect a new District 8 assembly representative. Current assembly member Kelly Cooper is not running for reelection, choosing instead to throw her support behind hopeful Theo Noomah, a Homer resident and current Economic Development Advisory Commissioner. Noomah confirmed Tuesday that he will be filing for the District 8 seat.
Three seats on the South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area Board — those currently held by Erin Workman, chair Francie Roberts and treasurer Tamara Fletcher — are also open.
All candidates filing for office must be a qualified voter in the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Candidates for borough mayor must be a KPB resident for one year before filing. Assembly, school board and service area board candidates must reside in the district or service area they seek to represent for at least one year before filing.
Declaration of Candidacy packets are available in the city clerk’s office at Homer City Hall as well as the borough clerk’s office in Soldotna. Candidates may submit their completed packets to either the Homer city clerk or the borough clerk.
Find additional candidate filing requirements and current election information on the KPB website or call 907-714-VOTE (8683).
The general election for local, state and federal offices will take place Nov. 3.
