Alaska State Troopers
Sept. 1
At 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of a missing hunter on a solo hunt near Halibut Cove. The hunter had been regularly messaging and providing his GPS location to his wife via a satellite communication device during the hunt but had not been heard from since 7 p.m. Aug. 31. Troopers attempted to contact the hunter via a satellite communication device and received no response.
Troopers then conducted an aerial search in a Super Cub but did not locate the hunter or his camp. Garmin Response Center was contacted and provided the hunter’s most recent device coordinates. The location provided by Garmin matched the last known location provided by the man’s wife. At 7:35 p.m., an aerial search was conducted via helicopter in the area of those coordinates, but the hunter was not located.
Search efforts via air and ground continued on Sept. 2. Troopers reported finding the hunter uninjured.
