Later this month, the lights of the Porcupine Theater will be kept low — not just for a movie premiere, but for knitting needles, crochet hooks, sketchbooks and other quiet creative projects.

As the weather starts to cool and we all prepare for the quieter seasons of autumn and winter, movie-goers are invited to enjoy a fall film favorite and Craft Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, with a showing of the 1989 classic romantic comedy,  “When Harry Met Sally.” Its enduring humor, cozy settings and delightful comedy make it an easy choice for what will hopefully be the first of many cozy craft nights to come.

Movie theater craft nights have recently been gaining popularity. Often referred to as “craft cinema,” “knitflix” and “reel cinema,” these events offer people the opportunity to share their passions in a new and engaging setting. Crafting at the movies allows participants to make time for creativity and enjoy a familiar movie in a new and engaging way. This trend has reached Alaska, with events being held at the Bear Tooth Theatre in Anchorage and now the Porcupine in Homer.  

Attendees are invited to bring a variety of mess-free crafts including crochet, knitting, needlework, coloring and sketching. Homer Art and Frame will have a table selling activities for those who don’t have crafts to bring. The Porcupine will also offer their usual favorite movie snacks for attendees with an appetite.  

With the lights low, a classic film on the screen and hands busy making, The Porcupine’s first craft night promises to be an evening that feels a little less like going to the movies and a little more like coming home. The theater will be a place to make, create and enjoy the simple comfort of doing both together.  The theme of the night, as a nod to the film, is “Don’t fake it, make it.”
