The Homer City Council election looks like a real contest now with three candidates running for two open seats.
Matthew Bullard joined the race on the last day of the filing period, Sept. 15.

Bullard previously filed to represent Homer on the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly. Borough clerk Michele Turner confirmed Wednesday that he withdrew his Assembly candidacy.
“I was fully committed to the race. It was only after filing that it became clear another strong candidate had also stepped up,” Bullard said.
He sat down with Larry Anthony, also running for the District 8 seat, and found their priorities closely aligned.
“We agreed it would be best for only one of us to run for the Assembly seat and we both concluded that Larry is the strongest candidate for it,” he said.
Bullard co-owns and operates a dental office in Homer with his wife and is a volunteer firefighter/EMT with the Homer Volunteer Fire Department. He currently serves on the South Peninsula Hospital Board of Directors; his term expires in December. He also ran unsuccessfully for the Homer Electric Association Board of Directors last year.
He said in his candidate statement that he plans to focus on the basics if elected to the council: “safe roads, reliable water and sewer, plowed snow, a well-run harbor and a budget that respects taxpayers — responsible government for the people who live here.”
“Stepping down from the Assembly race doesn’t change how much staying involved in our community matters to me. I want to help guide Homer in the right direction, and the Council is where those everyday decisions get decided,” he said.
Incumbents Bradley Parsons and Caroline Venuti are also running to retain their council seats.
Current council member Shelly Erickson is running unopposed for Homer mayor.
