The Homer Mariner Football team suffered a tough 16-0 loss to the Redington Huskies last weekend at home. Homer is now 1-1 in conference play while Redington is 2-0.

The Mariner defense started strong, forcing a fumble and interception in the first quarter. The Mariners got into the red zone but gave the ball to the Huskies after a failed fourth down attempt.

The Huskies ran the ball down the field, eventually finding the endzone at the end of the second quarter. That brought the halftime score to 8-0.

Redington scored again in the third quarter with a 22-yard pass. The Huskies ran the ball out to the right for a successful conversion.

“Defense hung in there and showed some resiliency throughout the whole game. Some young players stepped in and showed some promising play for the future,” said defensive coach Bryan Harter.

The Mariner defense came out in full force at the start with Maxwell Herndon recovering a fumble in the first play of the game. This immediately gave the Mariners back the ball at the 46.

The Mariner offense moved the ball up to the 42 before Redington forced a fumble and got the ball back.

The Mariners didn’t back down, and on Redington’s third down Ty Gibby intercepted the ball, giving the Mariners another chance to score.

The Mariners got to the redzone, but could not make it in and gave the ball back to Redington.

Both teams battled for the rest of the half before Redington scored with a 16-yard pass into the endzone.

Redington recovered their own onside kick at the start of the second half.

They marched down the field and, with a 24-yard tipped pass by Justus Grimes, they scored another touchdown.

Redington passed for 186 total yards and rushed for 112. Homer passed for 100 and rushed for 177 yards.

Both teams held each other off for the remainder of the game. The Mariners had some exceptional plays on both offense and defense.

Asher Rozeboom forced two fumbles, one recovered by Hugh Traugott late in the third and the other by Dayten Van Ostrand late in the fourth.

Joaquin Jackson had many great runs including a 15-yard run in the second drive of the game for the Mariners.

Justus Grimes also had some big runs including a 25-yard gain early in the second quarter.

The Mariners will play a rematch game against Barrow at home this week for the homecoming game. 

In other sports news

Homer varsity volleyball traveled last weekend to Sitka to play against Sitka High School and Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Homer went 6-0 defeating both teams all three days, now having an overall record of 10-1. The Mariners are ranked 10th in state and 4th in their division.

The top hitters on the team include Reilly Sue Baker, Swift Blackstock and Jaelynn Kennon. Madelyn Miotke also helped out the team defensively with 11 total blocks so far this season.

Alysha Nyvall leads the team with 166 assists, and Baker with 70 kills.

The team will play against Monroe and Houston this week for some tough match-ups.
