On the 25th anniversary last Friday of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Homer commemorated the day with displays of flags, memorials and fire trucks.
At the little park at the corner of Heath Street and the Homer Bypass, members of the Civil Air Patrol put up a forest of flags in honor of the 2,977 people who died in the fall of the Twin Towers in New York City, the plane crash in the Pentagon, and the crash of United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands more later died of illness and injury related to the attacks.

In honor of first responders and others who died, the Homer Volunteer Fire Department flew a large flag from its ladder truck and displayed fire trucks and other emergency vehicles in the parking lot. By the lot was a banner that read “Patriot Day — Never Forget” with a bouquet of roses. Of the 2,977 who died, 343 were firefighters from the New York City Fire Department, eight paramedics or emergency medical technicians, 71 New York and Port Authority police, 55 military service members at the Pentagon and one New York Fire Patrol member.

At the Homer vs. Houston football game last Friday, a helicopter with a large flag suspended below it flew over the stadium.
