Two years ago, the Homer Planning Commission approved initial permits and design for a contentious, large-scale hotel and condominium development at the base of the Homer Spit. Despite developer Doyon Limited’s original plans to complete construction by this year, little to no work has been done onsite in the time since, leaving community members to wonder: where did Doyon go?

“As Alaskans, Doyon continues to view Homer as a great place to invest our resources,” communications manager Cheyenna Kuplack said last week.

Under its revised application, Doyon plans to build a three-story, 70-room hotel and three condominiums providing seven units. Doyon no longer plans to build an on-site employee bunkhouse, but added two new viewing platforms and a pedestrian pathway to the Homer Spit Trail in their design.

Kuplack did not release specific details, but said the company expected to start early phase construction on the condos “in the coming weeks.”

On the hotel’s construction, Doyon is “still evaluating options.”

Kuplack did not provide further clarification on what those options are.

City of Homer Planning Director Ryan Foster confirmed that planning staff are reviewing Doyon’s zoning permit application for Lighthouse Village.

Developers are required to obtain a zoning permit from the City of Homer before starting new construction, including additions, according to the Planning website. Construction can start once the city issues the permit.

As of Monday, the planning department had not issued Doyon’s zoning permit.
