Community Resource Connect is

South Peninsula Hospital holds Community Resource Connect, a one-day gathering for anyone experiencing housing instability or financial hardship, and it offers a welcoming space to connect with support and resources. Folks are invited to stop by from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the SPARC to enjoy a warm meal, pick up groceries, connect with more than 20 local service providers and “shop” for free essentials like warm clothing and household items all in one place.

If you’d like to support the event, donations can be dropped off at the Homer Public Health Building. If you’d like to volunteer, please reach out.

SPH holds Wellness Wednesdays

South Peninsula Hospital (SPH) holds Wellness Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Kachemak Bay Campus. The first hour is on the health topic of the week, and the second hour is a movement exercise. Join SPH presenters for an evening of free health education, food and movement. After each talk there will be an hour of Integral Yoga led by Kali Tanaya. As always, free soup and bread will be provided, and all are welcome.

Jan.16: Exploring the Human-Animal Bond: Join local veterinarian Dr. Dots Sherwood for a fascinating conversation on the human–animal bond, and its impact on health and well-being. Drawing on research from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), this presentation will explore how relationships with animals influence physical health, mental health, social connection and resilience across the lifespan. Dr. Sherwood will share evidence-based insights along with practical examples relevant to individuals, families and our community.

Jan. 21: Advancing heart and brain imaging through AI with radiologist Dr. Edson Knapp is an educational session exploring the cutting-edge integration of artificial intelligence in heart and brain imaging. Learn how AI enhances diagnostic accuracy, improves efficiency and supports early detection of complex conditions. Dr. Knapp will share insights into the latest imaging technologies, real-world applications and how these innovations are transforming patient care.

Jan. 28: Join Frank Klima, RN, Emergency Services Supervisor at South Peninsula Hospital, for a practical and empowering session on responding to emergency situations in public settings. This presentation will cover how to assist someone who has fallen, basic first aid and CPR awareness, Stop the Bleed principles and guidance on when and how to call 911. Designed for community members of all backgrounds, this session will help participants feel more confident and prepared to act in critical moments while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Water’s Edge opens new addition

A good crowd of supporters braved the extreme cold on Jan. 7 to celebrate the opening of the new addition to Water’s Edge Pregnancy Care Center of Homer on Bartlett Street.  Years of prayer, fundraising and planning came to fruition in the fall of 2025 when a large team of volunteer craftsmen worked to expand and improve the center. The center thanked the people and businesses of Homer who supported this project and to Beachy Construction who managed the project. An open house is planned for later in the spring once the remodel of the original building has been completed.  

According to a press release, “If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy or know someone who is, contact the center for assistance. Water’s Edge provides free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, newborn supplies and spiritual support for women and their families as they navigate uncertainties. As the Pregnancy Care Center of Homer, it has been assisting families and the unborn for 40 years.”
