A group of about 25 citizens on Tuesday marked the start of the second year of the Alaska Legislature in true democratic fashion: They protested. Standing by the Homer Legislative Information Office on West Pioneer Avenue, they held signs that read “Tell Sarah: Vote Yes Override the Veto of SB113; Fund schools, roads, PFDs” and “Tell Sarah V. education matters.”
According to James Brooks of the Alaska Beacon, Senate Bill 113 would require online companies to pay corporate income taxes in Alaska for services delivered in Alaska instead of at the site of their server farms or other physical offices. If SB 113 is overridden, House Bill 57 passed last year directed some of those tax revenues to education. The legislature could vote on the veto override on Thursday, according to the Alaska Beacon. Between $25 and $65 million in revenues could be collected.

The Homer Legislative Information Office provides information to Alaskans on the legislature, include notices of committee hearings and how to communicate with legislators. Its mission is to provide “Alaskans with non-partisan information and facilitating public communication with the Alaska State Legislature.”
