Three community members will be honored for the way they make learning a priority and for their passion for sharing their knowledge with others during the Friends of the Homer Public Library’s annual fundraiser from 6:30-8:30 p.m. March 28 at the library.

Dr. Edward Berg, who was nominated by Shana Loshbaugh, will receive the 2026 Lifelong Learner Award for his immense academic breadth. He holds advanced degrees in philosophy, geology, and ecology, alongside a master’s in statistics and a doctorate in botany.
“His contributions to the community include teaching courses on climate change and Kachemak Bay geology at Kenai Peninsula College’s Homer campus, volunteering with the Homer Drawdown peatland project, and leading local nature walks. Dr. Berg is currently authoring manuscripts that summarize his lifelong research on the Kenai Peninsula’s evolving ecosystems. As Loshbaugh noted, his relentless curiosity and civic dedication serve as a true inspiration to others,” according to a press release from the Friends.
Lucas Renner, a senior at Homer High School, will receive the Youth Learner Award. Renner received two nominations this year — one from his band director, Eric Simondsen, and another from KBC mathematics professor, Dr. Jeffrey Johnson.
“Both Simondsen and Johnson highlighted many of Renner’s strengths as a learner. He demonstrates a strong passion and talent for mathematics and computer science, is an accomplished musician who plays both the euphonium and trombone — ranking as second trombone player in the state — and is a dedicated athlete in cross-country skiing and running,” according to the press release.
“He models a spirit of openness and curiosity that inspires other learners,” noted Johnson in the press release.
Jacque E. Peterson, a retired State of Alaska librarian, will receive the Library Spirit Award. Peterson previously served on the Homer Library Advisory Board and volunteers to promote literacy and learning.
“Peterson tirelessly seeks out great books and creates delightful handmade bookmarks to share throughout our community and beyond through Little Libraries, BOB the Bookmobile, boxes of books for soldiers, and more. She also supports Friends of the Homer Library fundraising efforts through pop-up sales and numerous book donations,” according to the release.
Tickets for the Celebration of Lifelong Learning are $50 and can be purchased at the Homer Bookstore or the Homer Public Library. Seating is limited, so early purchase of tickets is encouraged.
The evening will include appetizers by Vida’s Thai Food, desserts by Red Bird Kitchen, live music by Daniel Christ and Sophie Williams, a silent auction, a performance by the Homer High School Choir directed by Kyle Schneider, sponsorships for youth participants of the Summer Reading Program, and the Trivia Tree.
