Staff Report

Nearly 50 students in grades 3 through 8 participated in West Homer Elementary School’s 4th Annual Chess Tournament on April 10.

Andy Haas, one of the tournament’s organizers, described it as a non-elimination Swiss tournament style with every student playing all five rounds. Students with similar scores were paired against each other in each round, allowing everyone to play all scheduled games.

Results are determined by the total point value earned over all the rounds — one point for a win, half a point for a draw and zero points for a loss.

“We had 43 very good players competing who all did very well,” Haas said.
