Two survivors were reported rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard from the fishing vessel Velocity on June 9 after it sank in Shelikof Strait near Kodiak.

The Homer Harbormaster office and USCG confirmed that the Velocity has ported in Homer several times in the past. According to the Harbormaster’s office, the Velocity was last in Homer on June 8.

Petty Officer Nathan Bishop with Coast Guard Public Affairs said that the Coast Guard received an emergency position-indicating radiobeacon, or EPIRB, from the Velocity on June 9. In response, USCG issued a broadcast making the public aware of the emergency.

Shortly after, the Coast Guard received a report that a Good Samaritan vessel, F/V Snooks, responded to the case and rescued two survivors from a life raft.

Bishop said that USCG Marine Safety Unit Kodiak is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident.

Homer Independent Press could not reach the crew of the Velocity or the captain of the Snooks for comment.
